Product overview

The weighted (thick-walled) drill pipe produced and sold by our company Huichi Petro is made of thick-walled seamless steel pipe. It is a special transition drill pipe specially designed for oilfield drilling operations. It is an intermediate drilling tool between drill collars and ordinary drill pipes. It provides extra weight through thickened pipe body and special structural design, optimizes drilling pressure transmission and reduces the use of drill collars. It can effectively relieve the stress concentration in the transition section between drill collars and drill pipes, provide drilling pressure, and reduce the connection area and outer diameter wear rate between the drill string and the well wall.

Working principle

In drilling operations, the weighted drill pipe is installed at the bottom of the drill pipe column, between the ordinary drill pipe and the drill collar. When the drill bit breaks the rock, sufficient pressure is required to ensure the drilling effect. The weighted drill pipe, with its own heavier weight, can provide additional axial pressure to the drill bit, enabling the drill bit to break the rock more effectively. At the same time, the rigidity of the weighted drill pipe is relatively large, which can reduce the bending and vibration of the drill pipe column to a certain extent, improve the stability of the drill tool assembly, reduce the risk of fatigue damage to the drill pipe, and ensure the smooth progress of the drilling operation. In addition, the weighted drill pipe has a channel inside like the ordinary drill pipe for conveying drilling fluid, cooling the drill bit, carrying cuttings and other functions.

Core structure and features

• Thickened pipe body design

The middle pipe body is thickened (the outer diameter and wall thickness are increased), and the unit length weight is 3-5 times higher than that of ordinary drill pipe, providing stable drilling pressure and reducing the demand for drill collars.

Forged with AISI 4145H alloy steel, after quenching and tempering heat treatment and cold straightening process, the tensile strength is ≥135,000 psi, and the torsion resistance is improved by 20%.

• Transition section optimization

The gradual transition zone design at both ends effectively alleviates the stress concentration between the drill collar and the drill pipe, avoids fatigue fracture, and prolongs the service life.

The surface of the pipe body is high-frequency quenched, with a hardness of HRC 55-60, to resist the friction of the well wall and the erosion of the drilling fluid.

• Wear-resistant and anti-corrosion reinforcement

The joint area is sprayed with a tungsten carbide wear-resistant band (Hard Banding) to reduce the wear of the well wall and extend the maintenance cycle.

The inner wall is galvanized or epoxy coated to prevent drilling fluid corrosion and scaling, and is suitable for acidic environments containing H₂S/CO₂.

The diameter and length of the weighted drill pipe can be customized according to different drilling requirements. The common diameter ranges from 3-1/2 inches to 6 inches, and the length depends on actual needs.
